WOLLASTON LAKE, Sask. - Police say a family stranded on a rocky island in a northern Saskatchewan lake for three days survived sub-zero temperatures and freezing rain before they were rescued.

RCMP say three adults and a 16-year-old left Barge Landing by boat on Oct. 21 heading for Wollaston Lake.

A relative received a phone call from the boaters the next day saying they had run out of gas and were stranded.

Their cellphone died before they could give any details about their whereabouts.

RCMP officers, Canadian Rangers and volunteers searched in thick fog over two days before finding the family on Friday.

The stranded boaters had coats, a tarp and a bit of food and were able to start a fire when the temperature got down to -7 C.
