The family of a five-year-old boy is grieving after he was tragically killed Tuesday when his mother was backing up in a driveway in Innisfil, Ont.

The young boy, whose name has not been released, was riding a scooter at the time. Police and neighbours believe the mother was moving the family's SUV out of the driveway to make room for her son to play.

"She's pulling the vehicle out of the driveway to protect her kids, so he has room in the driveway to play, so he doesn't get hit and he zoomed out behind her," neighbour Denise Carl told CTV Barrie.

Police were called to the quiet residential neighbourhood on Fox Hill Street at approximately 5 p.m. Tuesday. Neighbours attempted to revive the young boy before he was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

"We tried to do CPR, my husband, myself and another neighbour – we tried," Raquel Browne said. "There wasn’t much we could do."

On Wednesday, the flag at Alcona Glen Elementary School, where the young boy attended class was lowered to half-mast.

A crowdfunding campaign has also been set up to support the young boy's family.

South Simcoe police are asking for anyone with information to contact them at 705-436-2141, extension 2030.
