The families of two armoured car guards that were shot and killed during a violent robbery at Edmonton's University of Alberta in 2012 are suing their killer and the company that employed them.

Eddie Rejano, Brian Ilesic and Michelle Shegelski were killed in June 2012 on the university's campus after a co-worker opened fire. At the time of the robbery, the three were servicing an ATM machine. A fourth person, Matthew Schuman, was injured in the attack.

The families of Rejano and Ilesic allege that the company that employed them, G4S, was negligent and didn't ensure their safety. The allegations have not been tested in court.

Travis Baumgartner was sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility for parole for 40 years, after pleading guilty to one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder last year.

Baumgartner was arrested the day after the robbery at a Canada-U.S. border crossing in British Columbia. He was found with $334,000 in a backpack, according to police.
