A Calgary landlord says her former tenants abandoned a 68-year-old woman in the filthy home they left behind, after they were issued an eviction notice last month.

Sandy Ert says her husband found a confused, "sweet old lady" in a bed in the home, which was left in shambles when the other two tenants packed up and left late last month. The home was filled with garbage, clothes, rotting food and dirty diapers.

Ert says she asked her husband to check on the elderly woman when they found her, to make sure she was still alive.

"She's naïve, I think is the word I'm looking for," Ert told CTV Calgary on Monday. She added that she believes the tenants were the elderly woman's daughter and granddaughter.

"That's your family," an emotionally distressed Ert told CTV Calgary. "What kind of family is that that they could leave her behind?"

The tenants were also caring for a baby, Ert said.

The case has been reported to the Calgary Police Elder Abuse Response Team.

Ert says the elderly woman told her she'd been there for two days, and that the woman's family promised someone would come and take care of her.

The woman was taken to hospital for a checkup and has been placed in care while police attempt to find her relatives.

Ert had been having problems with the tenants paying rent, she said.
