MIRAMICHI, N.B. -- The Nature Conservancy of Canada says its received a donation of nine parcels of ecologically significant land in northeastern New Brunswick.

The 256 hectares of land is situated on both sides of Point Escuminac with shorefront on both Miramichi Bay and the Northumberland Strait.

Point Escuminac is one of the few remaining areas where the endangered piping plover can nest and raise its young without being disturbed by encroachment.

The conservancy group says the beach area is critical habitat for 25 per cent of New Brunswick's piping plover population.

The coastline consists of bog, forest, salt marsh, sandy beach and eelgrass beds.

The land is a gift from the Maxfield family who purchased it in 1980.
