A pesky beaver is being blamed for leaving a Saskatchewan couple in the dark on their wedding day, after the busy rodent chewed through a power pole and knocked out their electricity.

Kim and Calum Martin spent months planning their May 27 nuptials at The Resort, at Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. They had plans of a hot catered meal, lots of music, and twinkling lights.

The ceremony was lovely but just as the afternoon reception began, the lights went out.

Park managers discovered that a beaver had chewed through the wood of a huge utility pole that brought power not just into the facility, but to the whole surrounding area. Much of the Cypress Hills and Maple Creek areas were affected and it looked like the outage just might doom the wedding.

“The manager came out a little bit stressed and said, ‘We don't have power. We have a contingency plan in place but there is no power’,” Calum Martin recalls.

Staff at the resort were able to put out candles and boot up two generators. That kept a few lamps running and the music playing. But the power stayed out for the rest of the evening.

In the end, their generator-powered wedding was pretty much just like any other, says bride Kim Martin.

"The food was hot, the music was loud, there were drinks -- there was everything we wanted. There was less light, but that really was it and that wasn't a big deal to us," she said.

As for the beaver, Kim wonders whether the furry fellow might have been trying to send a message.

"We think it was a blessing, as our Canadian wedding was blessed by the beaver,” she said. “It makes it extra special."
