A convicted killer who escaped from a minimum security prison in British Columbia has been apprehended.

Robert Raymond Dezwaan escaped from the Fraser Valley’s Mission Institution Friday afternoon, Correction Service Canada authorities say.

The 53-year-old from Kelowna, B.C. had been serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for 15 years. Dezwaan was convicted of second-degree murder in 2003 for the 2001 strangling death of 16-year-old Cherish Oppenheim in Merritt, B.C.

Authorities say Dezwaan was apprehended Saturday morning by the Fraser Valley RCMP.

Correction Service Canada and the RCMP have not released details about Dezwaan’s escape and subsequent arrest.
