Toronto’s Malvern community is reeling after a 14-year-old boy from Scarborough was shot and killed in Jamaica over the weekend.

Police in Kingston, Jamaica say Ricardo Williams died after being shot early Sunday morning.

According to Hunt's Bay Police, residents in St. Andrew -- an area just west of downtown Kingston -- heard "explosions" around 1:50 a.m.

Williams was found suffering from gunshot wounds and taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Investigators said the shooting took place while Williams was attending a wake.

Family friends said Williams, who was set to begin Grade 10 this week, lived with his father in Malvern and was visiting his mother in Jamaica at the time of the shooting.

Police have listed Omar James -- also known as "Judge" -- as a person of interest in connection with the shooting.

Meanwhile, Williams’ friends say they’ll remember him for his sense of humour.

“He was a joker,” said Kahdel Elbers. “He liked to make jokes. That was basically Ricardo every day.”

Speaking to CTV Toronto, others sent their condolences to the boy’s father and offered their support.

“He came here to get a better life and he sends his son down to visit his wife and this happens. It’s horrible,” said Shannon Dorsey, a family friend.

In a statement issued late Sunday, Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs said Canadian officials in Kingston are "in contact" with local authorities to gather information on the death, and they are providing assistance to the teen’s family.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who passed away in Jamaica," the statement said.

Family friends say Williams’ father has gone to Jamaica to be with other grieving family members.
