Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre will not be charged for destroying public property, after the mayor took a jackhammer to the foundation of a Canada Post mailbox earlier this year.

Coderre drilled through the concrete foundation on live TV in August, in protest against the phasing out of door-to-door mail delivery and the introduction of community mailboxes.

At the time, he called it "arrogant" to install the foundation for a community box without first consulting the local neighbourhood.

Police say they received a complaint about the destructive protest, and launched an investigation which concluded the mayor should not be charged.

Canada Post has since stalled the conversion to community mailboxes, saying it plans to work with the new Liberal government to "determine the best path forward."
