A 29-year-old Quebec City man was arrested after allegedly leaving his young son unattended while he went to a local bar.

Police say a 5-year-old boy woke up at his father's home during the night; after realizing his father was not there, the child went outside to search for him.

Police found the boy standing near a busy Quebec City intersection at approximately 1 a.m. Monday. He was wearing only his underwear but was in good health. Police said they do not know how long the child was outside.

After determining where the boy lived, police arrested the boy's father when he returned home early Monday. The man was drunk at the time, police said.

The father was released from police custody under strict conditions. He is due back in court in November.

The child has been returned to his mother.
