CHETICAMP, N.S. -- A Cape Breton campground remains closed after flooding caused by heavy rain Saturday forced the removal of several scores of campers.

Kelly Deveaux a manager at Cape Breton Highlands National Park, says a downpour led to a rise in the level of the Cheticamp River.

Deveuax says that prompted park officials to remove campers from the lower and upper sites at the Cheticamp Campground.

She says 69 people spent the night sheltered in the fire hall in Cheticamp, while people who were in 29 recreational vehicles were able to park at the local arena.

Deveaux says water levels receeded enough to allow some visitors to return to the campground to retrieve personal items on Sunday.

She says the campground will remain closed until further notice.
