An Ottawa-area woman has died in a Mexico balcony collapse on the first day of her honeymoon.

Shannon Amy Guy of Carleton Place, Ont., was killed Wednesday when a third-floor balcony at the resort where she was staying collapsed, killing her and injuring two others.

Guy and her husband Paul were married in August and had just begun their honeymoon in Mexico, her mother, Cathy Harker, told CTV Ottawa.

Guy leaves behind two young daughters.

Harker said Guy was on the balcony with two other people and Paul was taking a picture of them when the incident occurred.

In a statement, a Foreign Affairs spokesperson said: “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the Canadian who passed away and the 2 other Canadians who were injured.

“Canadian consular officials in Mexico are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information and are providing consular assistance to those affected.”
