A Nova Scotia man’s mysterious message in a bottle has washed ashore in Croatia -- 28 years after it was sent.
Penned in 1985 to a woman named Mary, popped into a bottle and presumably tossed into the ocean, Jonathon’s letter travelled an incredible 6,000 kilometres to an unlikely destination in Croatia, reports Croatian newspaper Dubrovack Vjesnik.
“Mary, you really are a great person,” says the message. “I hope we can keep in correspondence. I said I would write. Your friend always, Jonathon, Nova Scotia, 1985.”
Did Johnny love Mary? Are they old friends? Is it a prank? No one knows. The vague note uses only first names and, obviously, has no postmarks.
Surfers discovered the half-broken bottle that contained the small, plastic-coated note under layers of leaves on a beach along the Adriatic Sea.
Jonathan’s letter would have had to make an incredible journey to get to its destination on the other side of the world, floating across the Atlantic Ocean, through the Mediterranean Sea and up the Adriatic Sea before washing up on the beach.
If only email had been around in 1985.
