A Windsor, Ont., man who was shot at the Windsor-Detroit border crossing early Sunday was waving a ‘replica of a handgun’ at U.S. border officers, authorities now say.

The incident occurred at the Ambassador Bridge crossing at approximately 3 a.m. The man, who has not been identified, was treated for his injuries and detained.

In a statement issued late Sunday, the U.S. Customs and Border Protections said after a preliminary investigation, they have determined that the man was “holding a replica of a handgun” when he approached U.S. border guards at the primary inspection lanes.

Earlier, Customs and Border Protection said that after approaching the inspection booth, the man got out of his car and started walking toward the inspection lanes waving what was believed to be a handgun.

Border guards ordered the man to drop his weapon, the statement said, but the suspect did not comply. He allegedly pointed what appeared to be a firearm in the guards’ direction, the guards opened fire. The CBP said border guards fired four rounds in total, one of which hit the man in the arm.

U.S. border officials said the man was treated in hospital before being taken into custody.

Windsor Police said their officers had an encounter with the suspect shortly before the shooting.

In a news release, Windsor Police said at approximately 2:40 a.m., officers arrived at the parking lot of a local McDonald’s after receiving information about a man in a black Ford Explorer toting a gun.

Police say the suspect was ordered at gunpoint to drop what was believed to be a weapon.

According to police, the man said to the officers, “Why haven’t you shot me yet?” before getting back into his car and driving off.

“Police later learned that the suspect was involved in an incident in the United States with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers,” the statement said.

The man could be facing charges in both Canada and the U.S.

The U.S. Office of Inspector General, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s office and Detroit Police are investigating the incident.
