A five-year-old cyclist has died after being struck by a vehicle in downtown Toronto.

Police were called to the scene at Lake Shore Boulevard West and Jameson Avenue around 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Const. Clint Stibbe said the boy had been riding his bicycle westbound on a cycling path when he “fell from that bicycle and fell onto the roadway.”

The boy was subsequently struck by an eastbound vehicle, identified as a Toyota Camry, Stibbe said. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Stibbe said the adult who was with the child at the time of the incident was taken to hospital.

Investigators have obtained video from the area but are seeking witnesses who would have been present at the scene shortly before or at the time of the incident.

Stibbe said there have been 24 road fatalities in 2017 and three have been children. “Often we don’t see any children involved in collisions but this year’s been particularly bad,” he said.

Police are asking anyone with children to keep them away from the roads where at all possible. “If they are riding bicycles or walking ensure that you put yourself closest to the roads, so that if something does happen, you have an opportunity to perhaps preventing that child perhaps from falling into traffic or putting themselves at risk,” Stibbe said.

No charges have been laid in connection with the fatality.
