The Canadian Border Services Agency is reviewing the circumstances around the death of an individual who was in the agency's custody.
The CBSA said Tuesday that the individual died while in detention at the Toronto East Detention Centre.
The Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has been notified of the death.
The CBSA said the individual's identity will not be immediately released.
An individual may be detained if a CBSA officer:
- Considered it necessary to complete an examination
- Was not satisfied with the individual's identity
- Had reason to believe the individual was danger to the public
- Had reason to suspect an individual was inadmissible to Canada for security reasons, criminality or violating human rights
