Ottawa's Special Investigations Unit confirmed on Tuesday that the man found in the Rideau River was the 23-year-old suspect wanted in the death of an Ontario man.

In its statement, the SIU said it is continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the death of Calgary native Muhab Sultanaly Sultan.

Sultan had been wanted in the death of Jeremy Cook, from London, Ont., who was killed after tracking his missing cellphone on June 14.

Cook lost his cellphone after leaving it in a taxi cab earlier this month, and used a phone-tracking app to find its location.

The app took him to a parking lot at a mall in the London's north end, where three men were sitting in a silver 2004 Mazda at about 5:20 a.m.

The car attempted to drive away, but police say Cook grabbed the driver's side door. Several shots were fired at Cook, who later died from his injuries. The vehicle fled the scene and crashed into a pole, where police later recovered Cook's phone.

A Canada-wide search began for the three suspects who were in the car at the time of the shooting, with an arrest warrant for Sultan on charges of second-degree murder.

On June 25, London Police Service announced they were looking into a link between the shooting and an attack on Ottawa police officers.

One day earlier, on June 24, Ottawa police called the SIU after being unable to find a man who jumped into Rideau River. The same man had fled from police after trying to run down two officers on bicycles.

Then a few days later on Saturday morning, police found the body of a man in Rideau River, but couldn't release his identity at the time.

Police are still searching for information on the other two men in the car.

One man is described as having very short hair, and was wearing a black jacket or shirt and fitted hat. Authorities said they are also hoping to speak with the third man seen in the vehicle, but have not released a description.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact police at 519-661-5670, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
