A Nova Scotia woman was "shocked" when her fiancé surprised her by proposing through a series of signs posted along a highway on Mother's Day.

Ashley Crossley was driving back from a monster truck show in New Brunswick over the weekend with her oldest daughter when she spotted a sign beside the road.

The sign said “Ashley,” with a heart beside the name.

At first, Crossley wasn't sure it was for her. And a second sign that said "Happy Mother's Day" didn't really clear things up.

"It was Mother's Day, nobody would question that," Crossley told CTV Atlantic.

But after several more posters with affectionate messages, it was the grand finale that left her speechless. The final sign said: "Will you marry me?"

"I couldn't speak afterwards," Crossley said.

"I was completely shocked, I didn't expect anything on our way home."

Jessyka Lavallee said it isn’t easy to surprise her new fiancé, but Crossley's weekend trip provided the perfect opportunity.

"She's the type of person that you can't really surprise, because she's just too smart for her own good," Lavallee said.

The couple has only been dating for a couple of months, but they say that it doesn't matter because they just "know."

"I have never been so comfortable within myself, let alone with somebody -- so this is it," said Lavallee.

"You feel different when you know, as opposed to your other relationships," added Crossley.

And after the proposal was accepted, Lavallee had one final sign to make: "She said yes."
