A 27-year-old man from northern B.C. was killed by a black bear while on a camping trip with his fiancée Saturday night.

The BC Coroners Service said Daniel War Folland O'Connor and his wife-to-be were in a small campground near Mackenzie, B.C.

Authorities said the man was attacked after he fell asleep near a fire pit. His fiancée had gone to bed earlier in the couple's motorhome.

"After getting up in the morning, (she) realized something was wrong and went for help," Barb McLintock, a spokeswoman, for the BC Coroners Service told CTV Vancouver.

Mounties were called to the campsite at approximately 10 a.m. on Sunday morning. When they arrived, they shot and killed both a wolf and a 300-pound black bear before discovering the body of the dead camper.

Conservation officers confirmed Monday that the man had been attacked by a black bear.

"Our hearts go out to the family, and in a small community like this, it's a huge loss," said conservation officer Kevin Van Damme.
