NORTH PRESTON, N.S. -- An animal welfare group says charges are pending after 25 distressed dogs were seized from a home in Halifax.

The SPCA and police say they found 25 American Staffordshire terriers, including several newborns, at a house in North Preston on Saturday.

Const. Jo Anne Landsburg says the animals were housed in extremely unsanitary conditions in an area filled with excrement and no protection from the heat or cold.

The animals were taken for veterinary care, while the SPCA says it will try to rehabilitate them.

Police say charges are pending under the Animal Protection Act.
