RCMP say one man is in custody after two people were stabbed to death at a work camp in northwest Alberta early Tuesday morning.

Police were called to the camp in Fox Creek, Alta., just before 2 a.m. after receiving reports that a man, armed with a knife, was attacking people.

When officers arrived, they found two men dead.

Police also tracked down and opened fire on the armed man, who was wounded in the ensuing altercation, RCMP said. The man, 28, was transported to an Edmonton hospital in serious condition.

RCMP say that he was acting alone and they're not looking for any other suspects.

No one else was hurt. The stabbing victims have yet to be identified. Autopsies have been arranged for next week.

The incident took place at an oil industry work camp called Berland Open. It is operated by Canada North Group Inc.

In a statement issued on behalf of sister company DJ Catering, Canada North said they are "deeply saddened" by the incident.

"Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ families at this time," the statement said.

Tyler McCracken, the executive vice-president of DJ Catering, described the camp as a workforce housing facility that provides accommodation to people who work in the area.

McCracken said staff and clients were at the camp early Tuesday morning but he wasn't exactly sure how many people were there at the time, or who was involved in the incident.

He added that the RCMP is currently questioning those who were on scene during the incident.

"They need to contact the victims and go through all the procedures that come along with something of this severity," McCracken told CTV Calgary.

McCracken said that the company plans to offer their support to employees, including counselling services.

"I assume a number will want to return home, (and) we will be making available whatever services we can to help our staff," said McCracken.

Edmonton’s Major Crimes Unit is probing the double homicide, while the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has also been called in.

ASIRT investigates incidents or complaints involving the serious injury or death of a person that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer.

The town of Fox Creek is located approximately 260 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
