One person is dead and two police officers have been injured following a shooting and stabbing in Mississauga Friday.

The civilian victim has not been identified.

Peel Regional Police say one officer suffered a gunshot wound and the other was stabbed during an interaction with the male civilian. Both officers were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The incident happened on Queen Frederica Drive, near Dixie Road and Dundas Street East at approximately 11 p.m.

A witness named Sandra, who declined to give her last name, said she saw people being arrested and loaded into ambulances after the incident.

"When I first came outside, the residents were telling me they heard gunshots," she said."It was scary at first when I first came out until I found out what was really going on, then I kind of relaxed a bit."

Sandra said she saw a woman taken into police custody and put into a police cruiser before she was transferred to an ambulance.

"I guess something was wrong with her and she went into the ambulance. Then we saw another young girl put into ambulance, she just had a mask on her, she didn't look seriously hurt but they end up taking her away."

Const. George Tudos says at least 40 officers responded to the incident Friday night. The entire housing complex was still taped off by police on Saturday morning, stretching about two neighbourhood blocks.

The province’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, was also called to the scene.

The SIU is called to investigate whenever police are involved in an incident resulting in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Police say there are no outstanding suspects in connection with the incident.
