Despite a large plume of smoke visible from the western boundary of a central Alberta town, emergency crews say there is no threat. The Didsbury Fire Department posted details about an out-of-control wildfire in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area being managed by wildfire teams on Thursday. “At this time, there is no concern or immediate threat to the Town of Didsbury,” officials said. “Crews and the appropriate agencies are monitoring the situation and will provide updates if anything changes.” The blaze is estimated to be 1,028 hectares in size and was discovered west of the town of Sundre on Thursday afternoon. It’s already forced the evacuation of a portion of Clearwater County. It’s not clear how it began, Alberta Wildfire says. It’s one of 11 active wildfires currently burning in Alberta and the only one that’s categorized as out-of-control. Crews say smoke in the area is to be expected and residents are advised to stay away. “Please avoid unnecessary travel toward the area so emergency crews can access it safely if needed,” officials said. “Thank you for staying aware and looking out for one another.”
