A popular hiking area in Banff National Park was closed Saturday to the public due to suspected drowning incident. Banff posted the notice on its Facebook page Saturday just before noon, saying that Johnston Canyon Trail and day-use area were closed in support of a visitor safety operation. “Parks Canada is responding to a suspected drowning incident near the Lower Falls area at Johnston Canyon,” it said. “The RCMP is leading the investigation and Parks Canada visitor safety specialists and law enforcement officers are on site supporting the response.” Parks Canada extended its condolences to the family of the victim. Members of the public are asked to stay clear of the area and to allow responders to work. There will be an update once the area is reopened to visitors.
