The national average for gas prices has dropped to less than a dollar per litre for the first time in nearly five years.

According to the website Gasbuddy.com, the national average per litre of gas on Friday was 99.309 cents. 

The price per litre ranged across the country, from a low of 87.3 cents in Alberta to a high of $1.18 in the Northwest Territories.

According to the website, average gas prices in major Canadian cities were as follows:

  • Edmonton 81.092 cents per litre
  • Winnipeg 88.348 cents per litre
  • Calgary 89.284 cents per litre
  • Saskatoon 90.832 cents per litre
  • Regina 91.909 cents per litre
  • Ottawa 96.185 cents per litre
  • Toronto 98.835 cents per litre
  • Halifax 99.958 cents per litre
  • Vancouver 107.832 cents per litre
  • Montreal 109.882 cents per litre

StatsCan said Friday that gas prices have dropped by about 5.9 per cent compared to one year ago.

In November, StatsCan's gasoline price index fell 7.5 per cent, marking the fifth straight month the index has decreased.
