TORONTO -- North American stock markets were near break-even Thursday morning, dipping slightly after a series of gains.

The S&P/TSX composite index in Toronto was down 6.27 points at 13,862.08 points. The index rose 221 points on Wednesday, the fourth consecutive trading day of gains.

The Dow Jones average of 30 stocks was down 4.98 points at 16,907.31, the broader S&P 500 index slipped 4.34 points to 1,991.49 and the Nasdaq index lost 42.05 points to 4,749.10.

The loonie was up 0.19 of a cent at 76.73 cents US.

On the commodity markets, the December gold contract fell $5.80 to US$1,142.90 an ounce, the November crude contract was up 99 cents at US$48.80 a barrel and the November contract for natural gas was up three cents at US$2.51.
