Canada’s high commissioner to the U.K. is encouraging expats to “bring a Brit” to London’s Trafalgar Square on Canada Day for a uniquely Canadian experience -- Tim Hortons coffee and doughnuts.

Janice Charette treated guests at Canada House to a generous spread of double-doubles, Timbits, and other treats for the announcement on Monday, explaining just how pervasive the so-called “Timmie’s addiction” is in Canada.

“Oh boy, do people go to Tim Hortons. It is very much a part of the fabric of towns and cities and villages right across Canada,” she said. “The fact is, eight out of 10 cups of coffee that are sold in Canada are sold by Tim Hortons.”

Canada’s iconic quick service restaurant chain will open its first U.K. location in Glasgow in early May. Charette said she hopes U.K. coffee fans will come to develop a personal connection to Tim Hortons similar to her own.

“I’m a hockey mom. So sharing it with my kids and my husband, or drinking it in a freezing cold arena at 7 a.m. in the morning, those are the kinds of memories I hope will be created by our U.K. friends as well,” she said. “We hope to see the success of the brand ripple across the U.K. in the months and years ahead.”
