Emergency crews responded to a fire at a northwest Barrie home Sunday afternoon that caused substantial damage to the garage. According to Eric MacFadden, Barrie’s deputy fire chief, the call came in at around 2:20 p.m. for a garage fire at a home on Benson Drive. Neighbours reported the residents of the home started their car that was partially in the garage to warm it up. The car then reportedly caught fire, spreading to the garage and partially into the attic. MacFadden says six fire trucks were involved in the initial response and crews were able to get it under control. CTV News observed firefighters extinguishing remaining hotspots and removing what appeared to be the fully burnt garage door. Police, paramedics and utility crews were also on scene. McFadden confirmed that there were no injuries, but the two occupants of the home are expected to be displaced because of smoke damage inside the home. The initial cause of the vehicle fire and total cost of the damage remain to be determined.
