VICTORIA - It may be a little creepy -- at least to some -- but it's now the latest Internet sensation.

It's not every day you're walking along the ocean shore when suddenly you spot an octopus grab a seagull with its powerful tentacles, and then drag the hapless bird under water to feast on.

Luckily, Ginger Morneau had a camera with her while strolling along Victoria's popular Ogden Point breakwater with her husband and brother.

Morneau said yesterday that they couldn't believe their eyes as they witnessed the rarely seen life and death struggle -- a struggle the Great Pacific octopus won in just under a minute.

But she had the presence of mind to quickly snap some photos, which she says nature magazines are now clamouring for.

Morneau admits to feeling some sympathy for the gull -- though not quite enough to brave a rescue attempt.

She also says her family later celebrated their adventure with a calamari appetizer.
