A notable no-show at the Frankfurt motorshow, Volvo has chosen Milan for the unveiling of its new compact premium SUV, the XC40. Along with the XC90 and XC60, the new model will be the third to join Volvo's line of SUVs. The Volvo XC40, which will be distributed worldwide, is expected to reach dealerships in the first half of 2018. Prices will start from 30,850 euros (US$35,200).

The Volvo XC40 will be the first car to be based on the Swedish brand's CMA compact modular architecture, which will be used for all of the future models in the 40 range, including future electric versions. The carmaker's first compact SUV, the XC40 will benefit from the safety and driver assistance features that have already been tested on the XC90 and XC60. These include the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive feature, City Safety (emergency stop), Run-off Road Protection and Mitigation, Cross Traffic Alert with brake support, and a 360° all-round-view camera to make it easier to perform tight maneuvers, which will make it one of the best equipped premium compact SUVs on the market.

Plenty of thought has gone into the XC40's interior, which has a lot of functional storage spaces on the doors and under the seats, a dedicated space for phones with a built-in induction charger and a fold-out hook for small shopping bags.

Volvo is also breaking new ground with its new "Care by Volvo" subscription service, which will be exclusively available with the new model, initially in Sweden, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, and the United States. The idea is to offer a range of concierge services: car wash, refuelling, valet pick-up for vehicle maintenance and delivery of online purchases to the vehicles trunk.

Another major innovation is that XC40 drivers will be able to share their cars with family and friends using a new digital key technology. This feature will exceptionally be available as standard on all XC40 models at the time of the launch, and thereafter will be limited to certain trim packages.

Initially, the Volvo XC40 will be available in gasoline and diesel versions, but hybrid and 100% electric versions have been planned. The car can be ordered now, however, series production is not set to begin before November 2017.
