Shell celebrated 30 years of refining oil in Alberta by rolling back gas prices to 1984 levels at select gas stations in the province on Wednesday.

The promotion saw eight stations across the province lower their bronze-grade fuel prices to 39.9 cents per litre – the price of gas 30 years ago – each for about an hour at a time.

The promotion was specifically celebrating the opening of the Scotford refinery and styrene plant located approximately 40 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. Shell says that all products produced at the Scotford refinery come from Alberta’s oil sands.

The oil company's Twitter account unveiled the participating locations throughout the day alongside the hashtag #1984Pricing. Photos from the Twitter feed also showed employees dressed to match the decade.

The average price for regular unleaded gasoline at the pumps in Edmonton was just over $1.12 per litre on Wednesday, according to monitoring site Tomorrow's Gas Price Today.

Albertans already pay some of the lowest prices for fuel in the country, still, the promotion was met with enthusiasm on twitter by motorists lucky enough to fill up at one of the participating locations.
