A student group from the University of Stuttgart, has managed to accelerate their GreenTeam electric car from zero to 100km/h in just 1.776 seconds, beating the existing world record by 0.006 seconds.

The car has an output of 100 kW and is propelled by four motors and a 6.62kWh battery. Weighing just 160kg, the car reached 100 km/h speeds in under 30m of distance travelled, a feat unachievable by even the most expensive exotic cars and the highest-performing cars in Formula 1 racing.

To satisfy Guinness World Record requirements, driver Priska Schmid needed to repeat the drive in both directions. Officials from Guinness are expected to confirm the feat in the coming weeks.

The previous record belonged to ETH Zurich and the Applied Arts and Sciences Department of the University of Lucerne, recorded in the fall of 2014.
