BMW showed off its latest retro throwback concept, the 2002 Hommage, ahead of the car’s official debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy.

The car is an homage to the 2002 turbo that came out exactly 50 years ago, though of course it’s highlighted by modern touches; where the original car’s body was bisected horizontally by a chrome strip, for example, the 2002 Hommage’s is split by a carbon-fibre band.

The design of the Hommage – led in part by Canadian stylist Karim Habib – is generally minimalist, save perhaps for the large vents, integrated fender flares and low front apron that hearken back to the 1966 car. It’s been painted in a unique Space Race Metal paint that subtly changes colour from blue to grey depending on lighting and angle.

As part of its “The Next 100 Years” campaign, the automaker in fact planned to bring all eight of its “Hommage” series cars to Italy’s Lake Como for the concours. That includes the MINI Anniversary Concept Vehicle 30 from 1997; the BMW Concept Coupe Mille Miglia from 2006; the BWM M1 Hommage from 2008; the 328 Hommage from 2011; the 3.0 CSL Hommage from 2015; and two Hommage motorcycles. All of the vehicles draw visually from past iconic BMWs.
