GMC debuted the 2017 Acadia in Detroit January 12, a midsize SUV that should find buyers in just about every corner of the segment given the company is offering five-, six- and seven-passenger versions and trims ranging from the premium Denali to a new off-road All Terrain.
The new Acadia is lighter – by some 318 kg (700 lbs) – and more maneuverable than its predecessor, and also boasts relatively good fuel efficiency numbers. It comes standard with a 2.5-litre engine, and is estimated to return 8.4 L/100km highway for FWD models; and 10.7 L/100km city, thanks in part to stop-start technology, a first for GMC. Above that engine is a 3.6-litre 310-horsepower V6 with an estimated 4,000-lb trailering capacity and predicted fuel efficiency figures around 9.4 L/100km highway. Both engines come mated to a six-speed automatic trans and feature direct injection.
Inside, the Acadia features split folding second and third row seats for all sorts of flexibility; with the second and third row folded flat, cargo room comes in at 2,237 liters (79 cubic feet). The rear centre console stretches all the way to the back of the Acadia – giving third-row passengers a handy compartment to stow items – and the vehicle also boasts a new warning that goes off when it senses something’s been left behind on the seat. All three rows also offer USB charging.
The 2017 Acadia comes with a suite of safety features, including several grades of automatic braking systems, plus an optional Tow Vision Trailering system with rear-vision camera. The vehicle comes in front-wheel-drive with all-wheel-drive optional—unless you get the new All Terrain trim, which comes standard with an Active Twin Clutch AWD system designed for enhanced hill-climb capability. It also gets unique trim inside and out. For buyers looking for more show than go, the available Denali trim includes several chrome-trim pieces outside along with special badging.
