So you have a case of the Mondays?

Well, clear the sleep from your eyes, put on a fresh pot of coffee and kickstart your week with your daily dose of CTV News' five things.

Here are the five things you need to know this Monday: Tom Mulcair is on the defensive after both the Liberals and Conservatives criticized his election program; Wes Craven, famed for his horror films, died on Sunday night at the age of 76; a new study from the University of Winnipeg has a warning for those living in colder climes; B.C. is seeing an explosion of bear encounters after a summer of wildfires and dry conditions; plus photos from the red carpet on the MTV Video Music Awards and a rundown of the night’s award show.

1. Mulcair under attack: As the federal election campaign enters its fourth week, Conservatives and Liberals are ganging up on Tom Mulcair, claiming the NDP leader – and perceived frontrunner – is not being honest about the cost of the party’s election program. Mulcair dismissed the claims Sunday, saying his rivals are trying to cut off the NDP’s momentum. The verbal jabs come as Mulcair prepares to announce measures aimed to end violence against woman today.

2. Master of Horror: Wes Craven, who helped define the horror film genre, died on Sunday at the age of 76. Craven directed and wrote such films as “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “The Hills Have Eyes” and “Scream.”

3. Cold weather brings heart problems: A new study is bad news for those who live in colder climates. A research team from the University of Manitoba conducted a study which showed that chilly winters may raise the risk of severe heart attacks by seven per cent for every 10 degrees the thermometer drops.

4. Urban bears: B.C.’s bears are apparently hungrier. Conservation officers say there’s been an unprecedented spike in the number of bear encounters as a wildfires and unseasonably dry conditions have ravaged food stocks, forcing the animals into urban areas.

5. MTV Awards: The MTV Video Music Awards were not without controversy as Nicki Minaj publicly called out fellow artist Miley Cyrus while rapper Kanye West announced he would be running for president in 2020. Catch up on the awards and best photos here.
